October 12 - Day 144 (143.5) - “For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.” ― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
For you, October 12 (St Wilfrid’s Feast Day) might be important because in 1845 Elizabeth Fry, social reformer died or because in 1948, the first Morris Minor, was produced at Cowley, Oxfordshire. It might even be because October 12 was the day in 1979 when The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, was first published, with it’s infamous reference to the Number 42.. I am sure a lot of people remember the events in 1984 on this day when, during the Conservative Party Conference. a bomb exploded in the Grand Hotel in Brighton or in 1989 on October 12 when the remains of Shakespeare's original Globe Theatre were found.
October 12 2021 will be remembered by me and others as the day we celebrated St Wilfrid’s 30th Anniversary with a Mass at Mother of God - the place it all began - with the people who made it happen - the quiet heroes. My address is called ‘Footing, foundations, hearting and coping’, more of which I’ll explain tomorrow. What we will remember when we think about all the clients, staff, volunteers and supporters, is that that the strong foundations in 1991 have created an enduring structure and vision that we believe will last for another 30 years and beyond.
