June 21 - Day 78 - 'We have flown the air like birds and swum the sea like fishes, but have yet to learn the simple act of walking the earth like brothers.' Martin Luther King
It seems very typical of England that on the longest day of the year, this was the first morning that my feet got decidedly cold again and the weather definitely did not make me think of Summer. Talking about weather - I got completely drenched on Friday going home - again questioning why what was described in the forecast as light rain was actually, according to my definition - completely chucking it down!
Anyway, both factors meant that I didn’t stop on my way home or this morning to take pictures so, instead, I’ve cheated slightly and used a picture I took in my garden yesterday. There seemed to be so many birds about yesterday, with some looking incredibly small and being taught by the parent how to get food from the feeder. (or in some cases being fed after the parent had got it for them). We also have a pair of pigeons who come to the garden all the time (and have been given names) but don’t appear to put any thought into what they are doing - often landing on the bird table and sliding down it towards the floor while trying to reach the seed. They then appear to walk proudly away as if to say - I meant to do that - and no I’m not stupid.
All the birds are fascinating though and a good reminder that the world out there is often more interesting and dramatic to watch than the world on our televisions or laptops. We just have to remember to sit still, keep quite and see.
It’s why, I like the quote used in the title - We have, throughout history, developed many skills, techniques and products that have enabled us to do more and go further but we still don’t seem to be able to share that world very easily with others or recognise what’s important in our own back yards or gardens.
Glen, one of our volunteers has lots of skills, shown by the fabulous and amazing items he makes in wood and metal. He is so willing to share those skills with others and has certainly recognised the value of giving - something that all of us at St Wilfrid’s Centre appreciate. The second picture today is of a railing he has just made for the Shoreham Street entrance so that clients are safer climbing the steps. It will, like your donations, make a real difference. (You can see his other items on Facebook - Upcycle Glen) We know, that without the generosity of people, giving their time as volunteers, or gifts, donations and sponsorship from our many supporters, St Wilfrid’s would be a poorer place in so many ways.
